Azul Macaubas

Quartzite

Azul Macaubas

Azul Macaubas is a celebrated blue quartzite quarried in the Vereda mountain range near Macaúbas and Boquira in the state of Bahia, Brazil, where it has been extracted since the late 1970s. Its vivid blue comes from the rare mineral dumortierite (around 15% of the stone), and as a quartzite it formed when an ancient quartz-rich sandstone recrystallized under heat and pressure into a stone harder than granite and highly resistant to scratching and etching. The trade name refers directly to the Macaúbas quarry district that produces it. (Some US retail listings label slabs 'Italy' for the finishing/import path, but the geological quarry origin is Bahia, Brazil.) Stone reads differently in person — full slabs vary in movement and tone from any single swatch, so we'll pull the actual slab for you to see before anything is cut.
